![]() The Neoplatonist Damascius attributes to Acusilaus (6th century BC) a cosmogony in which Chaos is the first principle, after which comes Erebus and Night, and from this pair are then born Aether, Eros, and Metis. In the first instance of sexual intercourse, he mates with Nyx, producing Aether and Hemera (Day), the pair of which represent the personified opposites of their parents. In Hesiod's Theogony (late 8th century BC), which the Greeks considered the "standard" account of the origin of the gods, he is the offspring of Chaos, alongside Nyx (Night). In a number of Greek cosmogonies, Erebus is described as one of the first beings to exist. It derives from the Proto-Indo-European *h₁regʷ-os- ("darkness"), and is cognate with the Sanskrit rájas ("dark (lower) air, dust"), the Armenian erek ("evening"), the Gothic riqis, and the Old Norse røkkr ("dark, dust"). The meaning of the word Erebos ( Ἔρεβος) is "darkness" or "gloom", referring to that of the Underworld. The name "Erebus" is also used to refer either to the darkness of the Underworld, the Underworld itself, or the region through which souls pass to reach Hades, and can sometimes be used as a synonym for Tartarus or Hades. In genealogies given by Roman authors, he begets a large progeny of personifications upon Nox (the Roman equivalent of Nyx), while in an Orphic theogony he is the offspring of Chronos (Time). In Hesiod's Theogony, he is the offspring of Chaos, and the father of Aether and Hemera (Day) by Nyx (Night) in other Greek cosmogonies, he is the father of Aether, Eros, and Metis, or the first ruler of the gods. While Blade ( and often the X-Men) have kept the Marvel Universe safe from vampire takeover in Marvel's mainstream reality, the issue solidifies some facts about how their natural hierarchy works, and that rather than being an extreme example of vampire gluttony, Pearl seems to be the natural final form of the undead predator. In Greek mythology, Erebus ( / ˈ ɛr ə b ə s/ Ancient Greek: Ἔρεβος, romanized: Érebos, lit.'"darkness, gloom"'), or Erebos, is the personification of darkness. ![]() Rather than the aristocratic, corpse-like Dracula of Marvel Comics, the most powerful vampires apparently look far more like Pearl.Īlthough Amadeus' interrogation by Fisk is interrupted by the failed attack of the Avengers, Kingpin meets his end due to aerosolized silver spread throughout his penthouse by one of Blade's weapons. Kingpin and Pearl are ultimately a form of apex vampire, with their undead state making it possible to engage in endless consumption without the risk of ill health. It seems that Pearl's size is not just a personal quirk, but something which happens to the most powerful vampires when they have unrestricted access to blood. While always a larger character, Kingpin is far more expansive as a vampire, and is suggested to now be immobile, taking care of matters via subordinates like Pearl. The interesting point about this version of the Kingpin is that he's basically become Pearl. With Blade continuing his hunt, his former vampire ally Amadeus Cho is kidnapped by what remains of the Avengers and convinced to return to Wilson Fisk, the current Vampire King-pin of New York. In the story by Daniel Kibblesmith and Federico Sabbatini, this transformation created the V-Wave, which immediately transformed millions (including many of Earth's superhumans), leaving the remainders of humanity divided between vampires and their dwindling food supply. When Blade reads from the Darkhold to stop the elder god Chthon, the evil book shows him a world where he failed to stop Frost from becoming La Magra. RELATED: Blade: Why Marvel's Comic About His Daughter Didn't Happen While it seemed that Pearl's huge size was a simple rarity, The Darkhold: Blade suggests otherwise. The quest for knowledge continued with Pearl, who was tortured with a UV torch, causing his skin to blister when he didn't give Blade the answers he sought. Despite the secrecy of his location, Pearl was discovered by Blade and his associate Karen Jensen after brutally interrogating one of Frost's familiars. Portrayed by actor Eric Edwards, Pearl was the archivist for the House of Erebus who worked alongside Deacon Frost, helping the ambitious bloodsucker translate and understand the long-lost legend of La Magra, the Blood God.
